Melbourne observation wheel to reopen

Melbourne’s giant observation wheel will finally reopen in late December, almost five years after being shut down.

The $100 million Docklands observation wheel was shut down in January 2009, a month after it opened, when a three-day heatwave caused the wheel brace and supports to buckle and crack.

Melbourne Star Management Group CEO Chris Kelly said it was in the final stage before opening in late December, but some activities depend on the weather.

The 120-metre-tall wheel is now called the Melbourne Star Observation Wheel and the company says it is the only giant observation wheel in the southern hemisphere.
